British Airways’ cabin crew have compiled a list of travel tips to try to pass on the knowledge they gain by flying so many thousands of miles each year.

Traveling to and from holiday destinations can be stressful, but with the right approach holidaymakers can arrive and depart in a relaxed fashion. British Airways crew suggest packing a pashmina or something similar into hand luggage, as moving between different climates can sometimes leave travelers short when it gets cooler. Pashminas pack down into a small space, and BA crew also said fold-up shoes can be good for a respite from normal shoes during or after a flight.

Another recommendation was to always take a pen in hand luggage to make filling in any forms necessary easier while on the flight. Any cosmetics packed in hand luggage should also not be filled right to the top, to avoid the contents spilling out as the cabin pressurizes. Another tip was for travelers to pack their favorite teabags for a taste of home wherever their holiday may be.

BA crew also suggested packing swimwear in hand luggage so that travellers could head straight to the pool or beach for a refreshing swim on arrival at their accommodation. A sarong was said to be a better choice than a beach towel for women, as it takes up less space in luggage, and baby wipes were said to be a good inclusion in cabin luggage, providing great refreshment for adults and children alike.

The last, and perhaps most memorable, tip was to prevent travellers leaving their passport in the hotel safe when leaving to fly home. BA crew said putting one of the shoes a passenger intends to wear for the return journey into the safe with the passport would help jog the memory before departing!

British Airways’ countdown to the London 2012 Olympics has begun in earnest, with the decoration of one of its aircraft in honour of the sporting event.

The carrier – which is the official airline partner of the 2012 Games – has confirmed that it is expecting to fly in visitors for next year’s event from more than 150 locations across the globe.

A BA Airbus A318 has been painted with the slogan ‘One Year To Go,’ and it will fly from London City airport to New York today at 13.05. Flight BA011 will fly past the Olympic Park, so get ready to wave if you spy it as the message will be visible to those in east London.

BA’s director of engineering, Garry Copeland, said, “This is the first time in the history of British Airways that we have branded the underbelly of an aircraft with a celebratory message.

“We hope it will bring a real sense of excitement to the Olympic Park and people living around the area. With the countdown underway, British Airways is preparing to welcome the world to Great Britain in 2012,” he added.

The airline will upload footage of the Olympic flight once it has taken place on its YouTube channel.

Due to strong, ever-increasing demand, British Airways’ winter schedule has been further revised to include daily flights from Riyadh instead of the six it had earlier announced. And with its five services a week from Jeddah, British Airways will operate a total of 12 flights between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and London Heathrow by end October.

The Riyadh service will be served using a Boeing 777 offering a choice of four cabins that includes the award winning Club World (business class) and the airlines flagship cabin, First.

Paolo De Renzis, Regional Commercial Manager Middle East said: “We are absolutely delighted with the demand from the Saudi Arabian market h since we resumed flights two years ago. Our two Kingdom’s share a great affinity and passengers are travelling for a wide variety of reasons from tourism to business to education.

“In response to this continuously growing demand, we quickly realized that the additional one flight a week from Riyadh, announced just over a month ago, wasn’t going to be sufficient. So, instead of adding one flight, we’ve decided to increase it to two, resulting in a daily service throughout the week from Riyadh beginning in end-October this year.

“Thins move is re-affirmation of our long-term commitment of serving our loyal customers in the Kingdom and reinforcing the brand as the preferred carrier of choice for travel into the UK or for transiting to other destinations in the extensive British Airways network.”

The 18-month long dispute between British Airways and its cabin crew is finally at rest. This comes after Unite the Union agreed to a deal with the carrier, along with nearly 2,000 British Airlines Stewards and Stewardesses Association (BASSA) members. Now all 9,000 of the airline’s crew will be balloted for a final decision, though this is seen as just a formality.

During the dispute, cabin crew have held 22 days of strikes, which disrupted thousands of travelers and cost British Airways about £150 million. They were against changes to working practices that were put in place in November of 2009, and the dispute led to disciplinary action taken against striking staff. There were more strikes planned for next week, but this agreement has avoided that wave of chaos for passengers.

Under the settlement, travel concessions stripped from striking cabin crew will be fully returned after the ballot confirms the end of the dispute, while disciplinary cases will be settled by binding agreements. Plus, crew will get 4% and 3.5% pay raises for the next 2 years, which is subject to productivity.

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey attributed the success of the deal to British Airways chief executive Keith Williams knowing that they wanted an honourable settlement. The union leader described the airline boss as a decent, honest and genuine man. Leaders of the union have always said that the row couldn’t be resolved through litigation, confrontation or intimidation, but only through talks, he added.

A British Airways spokesman said that they are pleased that the strike threat has been lifted and that the dispute can end. The new deal recognises that the changes to working practices put into effect by the airline are permanent, while changes have been agreed on to ensure this kind of dispute doesn’t happen again. The airline has a great future ahead, and everyone is ready to move on together, he added.

On Tuesday, Reading Crown Court heard that British Airways pilot Robert Brown (46) murdered his millionaire wife, Joanna (46) on October 31 last year and then buried her body at Windsor Great Park – all because of a prenuptial agreement dispute. The defendant denies the charge, as well as that he obstructed a coroner from holding an inquest.

The murder is said to have happened when Robert returned the children to their mother after half-term. They are said to have been at the home when he attacked. She was repeatedly hit with a hammer or mallet, which left extensive skull and facial fractures, as well as brain injury. After putting her in the boot of his car, he told his kids to get in and then dropped them off at a friend’s house. Then he went to a grave, which a forensic archaeologist says had been made several weeks earlier, and buried her in a remote area with the intention that no one would find her.

Prosecutor Graham Reeds QC painted a picture for the jury. He said that Robert and Joanna married in January 1999, but their relationship went sour by 2007, when divorce papers were filed. The proceedings were bitterly contested, and a lot of money was spent on High Court fights between them for 3 years. They first fought about their 2 children and then about finances.

Reeds continued that Roberts referred to the prenuptial agreement as a stitch-up and said he resented the thought that Joanna and her lawyers were going to rely on the contract to force him into a particularly unfair settlement during the divorce proceedings. He became convinced that she cheated him and that their marriage had been false. He believe she deliberately hid her wealth and conducted the proceedings with lies, aggression and exaggeration, the prosecutor added. The trial is estimated to last 2 weeks.

British Airways has pledged to continue operating direct flights from London to South America following its tie-up with Iberia, but it admitted Madrid may become a new hub for flights to the region.

Speaking at the Advantage conference, British Airways head of UK & Ireland sales and marketing Richard Tams said it made sense for the airline to offer more flights from Madrid which, unlike Heathrow, was not slot-constrained.

“We are still going to be able to support direct services to main points in Latin America,” he said, “but we have an opportunity to expand our Latin America network using Madrid.”

He said British Airways could launch more flights from regional airports to Madrid to feed into flights to Latin America. “We have to look at that. Our competitors are already doing this successfully.”

Criticising the Government’s decision not to expand Heathrow, Tams said it had discounted the airport’s value as a transfer hub. “It has looked at it too simplistically and doesn’t see the need for transfer traffic but what it doesn’t realise is that you can only sustain the sort of frequent long-haul services that make London a great hub to do business in if you get traffic from elsewhere.

“I believe the Government is thinking about this again, but I’m not holding my breath for a third runway at Heathrow.”

British Airways has this week unveiled multi-million pound plans to publicly promote its sponsorship of London 2012 for the first time.

The airline’s backing of the Olympics is its biggest ever sponsorship, and the new campaign marks the stepping up of the visibility of the companies backing London 2012.

As work by construction groups in Stratford slows down, the business focus for London 2012 is switching increasingly to the commercial partners signed up by Locog, the organiser.

The sponsorship deals have already raised around £670m for Olympic organisers, just short of the target of £700m, and are a key source of funding for the £9.3bn cost of putting on the Games.

But the companies are also providing key products and services that are fundamental to making the Olympics in London a reality.

British Airways paid £40m for tier one sponsorship and so far its campaign has been anchored by the Great Britons programme, which offers travel bursaries for talented individuals and groups. The new campaign sees Heston Blumenthal, Richard E Grant and Tracey Emin offering mentoring sessions for aspiring chefs, scriptwriters and artists. It will also feature 2012 athletes, such as sailor Ben Ainslie, in British Airways media adverts with the tagline: “They will fly.”

Willie Walsh, boss of British Airways-owner International Airlines Group, today warned passengers they further fare rises as the industry suffers from the high oil price.

The cost of crude has dramatically dropped over the past week, but airlines buy much of their fuel six or more months in advance.

Walsh pointed out that IAG’s fuel bill was almost a third higher in the first three months of this year than last, at €1.1 billion (£976,000).

“Fuel is our single biggest cost and it’s a big challenge for the whole airline industry,” he said. “Everybody’s feeling the impact.”

After British Airways last month announced its third fuel surcharge in four months, Walsh refused to rule out more. “There are no immediate plans, but it’s under review,” he said.

Walsh – who was promoted from chief executive of British Airways to the top job at IAG after the British airline’s merger with Spanish carrier Iberia in January – admitted fares will rise this year.

“Given the effect of fuel, that cost will find its way through to the consumer,” he said. “It’s a question of how much and how quickly. At the moment, 50% of the increase in the fuel price we’ve seen is being passed on to passengers.”

Walsh’s comments came amid IAG’s first quarterly results since the merger’s completion.

Its pre-tax loss for the traditionally tough first quarter narrowed to €47 million. The equivalent figure last year, adding up British Airways and Iberia’s individual numbers, was a loss of €273 million.

Between them, British Airways and Iberia carried 11,527 passengers during the first three months of the year, 3.2% more than last year. However, passenger revenues leapt 15% as more paid to fly in business and first-class cabins.

“The recovery in the economic environment has been helpful,” said Walsh. “Transatlantic and south Atlantic routes are seeing demand up very significantly on last year. Asia is also doing very well.”

IAG said the Japanese earthquake plus political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa will this year cost it between €90 million and €100 million.

“It’s a mixed bag,” Walsh concluded. “The economic environment is better and premium long-haul traffic has been very strong, but fuel costs remain a huge challenge.”
